Murang’a Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Union Ltd. is a dynamic federation of 17 primary cooperatives, united by a shared vision of improving the livelihoods of avocado farmers in Murang’a County, Kenya. Founded on 17th January 2020, our union brings together over 3,100 members—men, women, and youth—dedicated to sustainable farming and economic empowerment.

We are committed to supporting farmers at every stage of the avocado value chain, from production to market access, ensuring fair prices, reducing post-harvest losses, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Our History & Background

Murang’a Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Union Ltd. was established to address the challenges faced by smallholder avocado farmers in Murang’a County. Recognizing the need for collective action, 13 primary cooperatives came together to form the union, which is now registered with the Commissioner for Cooperatives (Registration No. CS/24768).

Since our inception, we have grown into a strong and vibrant organization, empowering farmers through capacity building, access to quality seedlings, extension services, and market linkages. Our efforts are guided by the principles of cooperation, sustainability, and inclusivity.

Our main goals are to enhance the profitability of the union through increased avocado production, value addition, and improved market access; and to build a strong, efficient, and well-governed organization that delivers sustainable and inclusive services to all its members.

Our main objective is to strengthen the organizational capacity, production, and market performance of the Murang’a Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Union Ltd while promoting inclusive services and advocating for a favorable policy environment in the avocado and horticultural sector.

Meet the Board

Peter Gachau Kanyua

Chairman

Provides overall leadership and strategic direction for the Union, represents the Union in high-level engagements, and ensures board effectiveness.

Justus Rukungu

Vice Chairman

Supports the Chairman, stands in during the Chairman’s absence, and provides leadership on various board initiatives.

John Mwangi Wanjeri

Treasurer

Oversees financial matters, budgeting, and accountability for all Union funds and expenditures.

Peter Njuguna Njoroge

Honorary Secretary

Manages board documentation, records meeting minutes, and coordinates Union correspondence.

John Mburu

General Manager

Leads the Union’s strategic implementation and oversees overall operations. The General Manager ensures that Union activities align with its mission to support farmers across Murang’a County.

Ruoho Wangechi

Projects Manager

Responsible for coordinating all Union-led projects, including the Sustainable Avocado Productivity Project and the Pack House Construction Project. Works closely with stakeholders, donors, and farmers to ensure impactful execution.

Dennis Maina

Accountant

Manages all financial activities of the Union, ensuring transparency, compliance, and proper utilization of resources. Prepares regular reports for the board and relevant stakeholders.
