About the Initiative

Murang’a County leads in avocado production, yet women and youth remain underrepresented in the sector. The Women and Youth in Avocado Initiative (WYIA) was launched to bridge this gap by promoting inclusive participation, agribusiness training, and climate-smart practices. Through targeted support, WYIA creates opportunities for improved livelihoods and cooperative leadership among women and youth.

Project Goal & Objectives

Overall Goal

To contribute to improved livelihoods for women, men, and youth within the avocado value chain in Murang’a.

Specific Objective

Increase productivity and incomes of smallholder avocado farmers by 2027.

Core Activities

Training and Capacity Building

WYIA equips women and youth with practical knowledge in avocado farming, pest control, and post-harvest handling to boost productivity.

Value Addition Skills

Participants are trained in transforming raw avocados into high-value products such as oil, cosmetics, and food-based items.

Access to Finance

The initiative connects beneficiaries with microfinance, SACCOs, and cooperative revolving funds to support agribusiness growth.

Market Linkages

WYIA facilitates connections between farmers and reliable local and international avocado buyers for improved income opportunities.

Climate-Smart Farming

Farmers are guided on sustainable, eco-friendly practices such as intercropping, organic inputs, and water conservation.

Cooperative Strengthening

Women and youth are supported to participate in leadership and decision-making roles within their cooperatives.
